The Atlas and Meniere's Disease. Is there Evidence?
Ringing in the ears/tinnitus
Sense of fullness in ears The illness has been around for a long time, but doctors have not been able to find effective treatments for the inner ear disorder. The lack of effective treatment eventually leads many patients to experience permanent hearing loss in one or both ears. The study above makes the case for Meniere's being related to sluggish circulation into the brain. As the author of the story describes:
When the tissues do not receive blood they stop sending signals to the brain, which in turn becomes the catalyst for symptoms like vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss.
Common Link to Chronic Neurological Disorders Readers of this blog will know that the effects that Structural Shifts in the head and neck have on blood flow into the brain. Between the research being done on multiple sclerosis, concussion, and migraine headaches, there's a growing faction of medicine saying that maintaining normal blood flow in AND out of the brain is going to play a large role in the treatment of several chronic neurological illness. Though no large scale studies have been performed the impact chiropractic has on Meniere's disease, there are some studies that provide a little bit of hope.
Dr. Erin Elster did a retrospective analysis of 60 patients with a complaint of vertigo that you can find here.
Dr. Michael Burcon did a similar retrospective analysis on 139 patients specifically with Meniere's disease here. Naturally more studies with controls need to be performed, but I can relate to the results of these papers in my office.
Dr. Chung's experience: While I'm far from an expert on Meniere's disease, the several cases of patients with vertigo and tinnitus with a diagnosis of Meniere's disease have had very successful outcomes. If what the researchers who tied blood flow to Meniere's are right, then we have a strong mechanism for how Atlas Displacement Complex plays a role in the development of Meniere's symptoms. Ask Dr. Chung more about your Meneire's case. We have Skype, telephone and in-person consultation options available. Here's one of my patient's testimonials to give a little bit more insight:
Testimonial "About three years ago I was diagnosed with Meniere's Syndrome ( tinnitus + ear fullness + hearing loss + dizziness & vertigo). Not a fun group of conditions to have, and with symptoms getting worse I knew I needed to try other approaches as my ENT was merely band-aiding symptoms without attempting to figure out root cause. I had read about NUCCA chiropractic on a forum, and figured this was an avenue worth trying...or at least ruling out. So I scheduled a visit with Dr. Chung at the beginning of 2014 with hope that he might find something but also wondering if this was an approach worth taking. After the first consultation, I can say I was impressed with Dr. Chung's knowledge and candor, and the fact that detailed X-Rays and thermal imaging are step 1 and he would only proceed if they showed an issue he could address. The 2nd visit was a review of my results, which did show misalignment of upper vertebrae, and thermal readings showed that my upper neck was under persistent stress ..."
